Take a look back at your old photo albums. Whether it is your first birthday, or your college graduation, the one recurring element you'll find throughout will be a cake. Celebration cakes play a major role in shaping our memories of the milestones in our lives and is therefore guaranteed to get its fair share in front of the camera. This being the case, you want to make sure that the cake you choose is not only yummy, but also doubles as a design element. Before you settle on just any cake, have a few slices of Mama's advice.
Find Inspiration In Your Design. Just a few days ago we talked about choosing a theme, and focusing on creating a cohesive scheme throughout your event. It is important to realize that the cake you choose will be a huge focal point, and a major part of that unified design. The color, shape and designs on your cake should compliment your over all theme. If you are more of a traditional person a classic white cake might be just the right choice for you. But, don't be afraid to think outside of the 3-tiers. The image below was inspired by a beach theme, and created by the very talented pastry chef at the Crescent Beach Club, in Bayville, N.Y.

Don't Forget The Budget! It can be very easy to get carried away when you are designing your cake. The more detailed your design, the more damage it will do to your wallet. A great way to keep the cake cost reasonable, is to speak to the catering director at your venue. There are a number of venues that will include the cake in the package price for your event, and have all kinds of photos for you to choose from. Don't see something in the albums they offer that you want? Don't be afraid to ask for something different, the worst thing they could tell you is "No".
Eat It Too! I know designing the cake is a lot of fun, but don't forget that you (and your guests) will be eating it once the photos have been shot. So, you might as well make it taste good. This used to be an easy task- chocolate or vanilla cake, with chocolate or vanilla filling. It is not so simple anymore. With choices like ganache, custard, cannoli, meringue, or red velvet- Mama strongly suggests you schedule a tasting or two. (I never said this was the "watch your waistline" blog). Tastings can be a lot of fun, and you'll be happy knowing your guests will look back at their pictures and remember how beautiful the cake was, and not how badly it tasted!
