Flower Power

Regardless of the type of event you are having, a floral arrangement within your decor will add a fresh beauty to the over all experience.  For some choosing a florist is based on convenience- maybe there is a florist right around the corner so you decide to just go there.  But for many, this decision can be an agonizing one- so for those who are finicky about their flowers, here are some suggestions to keep in mind when you begin your search:

• Listen to friends and family.  Word of mouth references can be a very handy tool when starting your research.  A great place too look for a reference is also the venue where you are hosting your event.  More often than not they have developed relationships with many vendors, including the florists, and can point you in the right direction. 
• Use the internet.  The internet can help you find florists that are located near you, and also allow you to view their portfolio right on their site.  Though, mama always suggests you go in and visit with each florist before deciding which is best- this will make it easier to decide which ones you'd like to go visit. 
• Compare the quality of the product.  Freshness is key in this business, so when you walk into your florists shop you should see flowers that are rich in color and plants should have green leaves.  If you find anything wilting or with brown edges- that is your cue to "make like a tree" and leave! 
• Look for variety.  A high quality florist will provide both fresh cut arrangements as well as exotic plants.  There should also be a selection of different vases or baskets.  If you are looking for a unique design you want to be sure that your florist is equipped to deliver it.  
• Look for personality.  You're entire event will be (or should be) an illustration of your personality and flair.  If the florist only offers the standard vase for all arrangements keep looking.  You are asking the florist to arrange a classy and artistic piece, if you were looking for standard, you may choose to select a pretty arrangement from your local supermarket.  
• Customer service is very important.  Watch how the florist interacts with other customers in the shop- are they friendly? Do they offer advice? When you are planning your event you will certainly stress a bit over the details.  You want to be sure that the florist you choose (or any vendor for that matter), will be able to work within your budget as well as offer suggestions on how to build the piece into your theme.  It is also a good idea to try to find a florist that is willing to guarantee their work. 

There could be a florist right next door, or it could be on the other side of town.  In order to ensure it is the perfect florist for you event focus on references, service, products, and designs, and make sure all of those aspects fit neatly into your over all plan.
